Unison has revealed it has reached a settlement in an equal pay employment law case on behalf of hundreds of female workers at a local authority in the north-west of England.

Almost 1,000 women who worked for Bury Council will receive a payment as a result of the agreement after it was found the staff members were paid less than male equivalent colleagues.

Regional manager at Unison Steve Stott stated it is a "great day" for all of the females who were underpaid during their time working for the local authority, adding: "It's also an historical day - this is the first council that Unison targeted with a mass litigation case for equal pay, after it failed to take the issue of fairness seriously."

Last month, hundreds of female employees at Edinburgh City Council were celebrating after an employment law case regarding equal pay was settled.

Staff including classroom assistants and social workers will receive millions of pounds as a result of a seven-year battle for justice.
